Access to potable water is still a challenge to many in Tanzania. However, this is not a major development threat in cities like Dar es salaam, where more than 80% of the population has water access. Other water challenges such as flood management, waterborne diseases and inadequate sanitation services are costing the urban environments huge sums of money, lives and time —all such crucial elements for community development.
The #MalkiaMaji Program intends to identify, build capacity and support active women in Tanzania who are to lead social behavioural changes and policy reforms in their communities for the water sector. This program will be running for three days, with workshops and lectures to equip the women with essential skills to assist them to excel in their Malkia journey for a year ahead and beyond.
A holistic approach to this program is to allow the fellows “Malkia” to lead change in the water sector for their communities. Extending from the learnings from this program, the fellows are expected to spend the rest of the year engaging with the local communities to inspire, ignite and spread solutions for water challenges they identify in the respective communities.
