Huru Initiatives, Vijana Think Tank, and UNEP in Tanzania are celebrating World Water Day with Young Women Changemakers
We are delighted to have successfully inducted 32 young ladies across Tanzania who are ready to use their social capital and influence in turning the direction of our water resources for the better.
These trailblazing women bring to the fellowship a mega experience of impact, ranging from leading award-winning tech innovations, and hosting popular mass media programs to implementing some of the big environmental initiatives in the country.
Their fellowship journey this year will see the development of solutions to some of the pressing water challenges in our communities, as they understand the challenges in depth
from visiting various communities as part of their mission. The Malkias will also be given opportunities to engage with experts from Tanzania and overseas in the water sector so they can expand their knowledge and network in the field.
This year’s fellowship was officiated by the Executive Director of the Tanzanian Media Women Association (TAMWA) Dr. Rose Reuben and attended by several guest speakers from various institutions in the country. We are happy to see the fruits of our collaboration with Vijana Think Tank in making this program a success. The UN Environment Program in Tanzania has also been instrumental in supporting the program, including by providing intangible materials to facilitate program development.
The culmination of this fellowship will provide the fellow(s) with the most-promising impact on the water sector with a cash prize to further the impact in the community and reward the Malkia for the hard work of finding lasting solutions to water challenges.
World water week this year marks the beginning of their journey. Achieving the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 6 and implementing some components of the #UNWater2023 Water Action Agenda in Tanzania during this #DecadeOfAction are a few things our Malkias are expected to toe on.
We believe women are our best bet in achieving a water-secure world. Ensuring sustainable water resources management in our communities should start with women. This program will help us in establishing a very crucial step toward our vision of well-managed water resources in Tanzania.
Huru Initiative’s Programs Lead, Emmanuel Minja remains grateful for the support received from Africa-Oxford (AfOx) Initiative and joins all other co-organisers in thanking all stakeholders who had an instrumental contribution to kickstarting this program.
