Local Organisations to Enable More Women to Create Water Solutions.

Recent studies show that in a rapidly developing economic hub like Dar es salaam, Tanzania, one out of six houses is not accessing potable water. This is a more signicant challenge in the rural areas of Tanzania where lesser houses have access to water at homes. This situation, together with the climate change intensity in our communities, compounds the growing trend to other water challenges such as ood risks, waterborne diseases, droughts, and inadequate sanitation services which cost sums of money, lives and time —all such crucial elements for community development. The unpopular burden of all these challenges falls to women, who are key gures in ensuring water availability at home and taking care of families at most times.

A recent study shows that up to 75% of Tanzania's children and women population are affected by water challenges.

The Malkia Maji Program intends to identify, build capacity and support active young women in Tanzania who lead social behavioural changes and policy reforms in their communities for the water sector. This program will run for three days, with workshops and seminars to equip the women with essential skills to assist them in excelling in their Malkia journey for a year ahead and beyond.
This program's vision is to see a community where women are charting solution paths for water challenges, enhancing their livelihood and being equitably represented in decision-making spaces. The core competencies this program builds in the participants are policy understanding, social change management and governance capacity, seeing these components as feasible interventions to include more women into the mainstream of water sector change-making avenues.

The mission of this program is to incentivize more women to take front spaces in making changes to the water sector in the community through policy lobbying and improved governance.

A holistic approach to this program is to allow the fellows “Malkia” to lead change in the water sector for their communities. Extending from the learnings from this program, the fellows will spend the rest of the year engaging with the local communities to inspire, ignite and spread solutions for water challenges they identify in their respective communities.
With fellows receiving patronage from the UNEP office in Tanzania, fellows will benefit from a well-founded support system to support them in reaching their change-making ambitions through a network of well-experienced stakeholders in the field.

The sessions will run from March 6 to March 7, 2023, virtually, followed by an on-site workshop on March 8, 2023. Fellows with then start their community Actions from March 10 to December 20, 2023.

An open call to young women to take part in this program is currently available through this link
Applications to this program will close on 14th February 2023, 4:59 PM EAT
